In brief: Volkswagen temporarily suspends production in Brazil

* German car giant, Volkswagen, has announced that it will temporarily suspend production at its plants in Brazil due to the severity of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic there. Production at Volkswagen’s four plants in the states of São Paulo and Paraná will be suspended between 24 March and 4 April “with the aim of preserving the health of employees and their families”, the company said in a statement. “Only essential activities will be maintained in the factories” the statement read, adding that administrative staff will work from home. Volkswagen had closed its factories for several weeks last year when the pandemic first hit. Brazil now has almost 12m cumulative cases of Covid-19 and over 294,000 deaths, with half a million new cases and 15,650 deaths recorded in the last week alone.
