In brief: New study shows future impact of mining in Peru

* A new study suggests that the execution of mining projects in Peru worth some US$56.16bn would result in a 12-percentage point fall in the national poverty rate over the next decade, to 15% of the population. The study carried out by the Peruvian institute of mining engineers (IIMP), a non-profit organisation, and the centre for competitiveness and development (CCD) at the Universidad San Martín de Porres also found that new mining projects would generate fiscal revenue of over PEN80bn (US$21.56bn) by 2031. It also estimates that the proejcts will benefit over 36% of the population through 3.8m direct and indirect jobs; and that the mining industry will make an important contribution to national economic growth, accounting for 1.3 percentage points of GDP growth on average per year until 2031.
