In brief: Mexico to build solar plants to power Tren Maya

* Mexico’s Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (Fonatur) is reportedly planning to construct solar plants across the country, which will notably serve to power the electric sections of the Tren Maya railway in the Yucatán Peninsula. According to documents accessed by the local press, Fonatur – which is the federal government agency responsible for overseeing the Tren Maya project – is planning to prioritise the construction of two plants, one in the north-western state of Baja California Sur and one in the Yucatán Peninsula in the south-east, to guarantee an adequate electricity supply for its tourist hubs (CIPs) in these areas and the electric sections of the Tren Maya. This would reduce dependence on supply of fossil fuel generated power from the state-owned electricity firm (CFE), which the government has recently sought to protect with a controversial electricity reform . Overall, Fonatur is reportedly looking into constructing 10 solar plants in the states of Baja California Sur, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Campeche, and Quintana Roo, although exact costs and capital needs are still being calculated.
