MEXICO: Legal battle over electricity reform comes to a head

A federal judge has ordered the indefinite suspension of the electricity reform approved by the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador after ruling that it curtails free competition in the domestic electricity market and may be unconstitutional. The ruling paves the way for the legality of the reform to be evaluated by the supreme court (SCJN), which will have the final word. With López Obrador insisting that there is no reason to annul a reform he considers to be critical, the matter has the potential to produce a major confrontation between the president and the judiciary should the latter ultimately rule against the reform.
