In brief: Brazil’s car industry grinds to a halt

* Honda has become the latest car manufacturer in Brazil to suspend its activities for several days due to the severity of the coronavirus (Covid-19) public health emergency in the country. The Japanese manufacturer joins Nissan, Toyota, Scania, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen in closing its plants “with the objective of contributing to measures to reduce the circulation of people”. Honda has said that it is in negotiations with unions over the form of compensation to employees for the hours of work lost. Brazil’s economy is expected to contract over March-April as a result of the partial economic shutdown due to the pandemic, which has now claimed 312,206 lives in the country.
