Looking forward: What will happen next?

It’s not over yet. Some early thoughts about the post-pandemic world are also worth considering, the first of which is that it’s not over yet. The rapid deployment of Covid-19 vaccines has led in some countries to promising signs that contagion and mortality rates are at last reducing. But, not for the first time, there is a danger that countries can become over-confident and complacent. While mass immunisation does appear to offer a solution, there are still many unknowns, including the emergence of new and more aggressive strains of the virus. Immunisation will take longer and be less affordable for poorer countries. For many, recovery will not come in 2021, with the pandemic stretching into 2022 and even 2023.
