In brief: Brazil reports formal job creation in February

* Brazil’s economy ministry has released the latest figures from the national employment registry (Caged) according to which 401,639 formal jobs were created in February. This brings the total stock of jobs in the formal sector to around 40.02m, a 1.01% increase on the total stock of jobs recorded in January. Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said the formal job creation figures were a record for the month of February which, following on from record figures in January, “indicates that we are, definitively, on the right path from the point of view of the recovery of economic activity”. This recovery is expected to be interrupted in March-April amid an uncontrolled second wave of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Guedes also repeated his support for the mass vaccination of the population to guarantee the safe return to work, particularly for “the 40m invisible Brazilians” who work in the informal sector.
