In brief: Mexico’s López Obrador claims recovery of jobs

* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said that of the 1.12m formal jobs lost as a result of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, 538,013 had been recovered. He made his comments in his daily morning press conference. His remarks follow figures released last week by Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) from its national employment survey (Enoe), which show that unemployment in February remained above pre-pandemic levels but had improved compared with January. The unemployment rate totalled 4.4% in February, down from 4.7% in January but up 0.8 percentage points on the 3.6% unemployment rate in February 2020.
