BRAZIL: Top brass pushed out after cabinet reshuffle

In a bid to shore up support from key sectors in Brazil, an insecure President Jair Bolsonaro carried out sweeping cabinet changes on 29 March. This led to the departure of the commanders in chief of the army, navy, and air force the following day. The reshuffle and its consequences not only confirm that Bolsonaro is losing political control as the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic continues to rage uncontained but they have also laid bare the cracks in his relationship with the upper echelons of the armed forces, once considered the cornerstone of his conservative government.
