ECUADOR: Presidential contest tightens

Guillermo Lasso is back in contention to win Ecuador’s presidential elections after finishing second in the last two contests, according to a survey published this week. The survey suggests that Lasso, a former banker and candidate for the centre-right Movimiento Creo, is locked in a technical tie with Andrés Arauz, a left-wing economist and protégé of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), ahead of the second round of elections on 11 April. It attributes Lasso’s improvement to the public perception that he outperformed Arauz in the presidential debate on 21 March. Lasso also seems to be picking up the majority of indigenous voters intent on exercising their franchise.
