Chile moves to delay elections

Chile’s elections will no longer be held on 10-11 April. The elections looked like becoming a casualty of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic after infections soared in recent weeks and the number of patients in intensive care reached a record high [WR-21-12]. The medical union Colegio Médico and President Sebastián Piñera’s Covid-19 advisory team warned the government in no uncertain terms about the dangers of proceeding with the constitutional convention elections in the current circumstances. Reluctant to have the most important elections in a generation being remembered as a super-spreader event that overwhelmed the health system, Piñera sent congress a bill on 28 March proposing a postponement of just over a month.
