In brief: Uruguay exports continue to perform strongly

* Uruguay’s national investment and trade promotion agency, Uruguay XXI, has reported that the country’s exports reached US$843m in March, a 25.5% year-on-year increase. This is the third consecutive month in which Uruguay’s exports have increased compared with the previous year. According to a Uruguay XXI report, with the March result the value of exports in the first quarter of the year totalled US$2.17bn, 19.3% higher than the value of exports in the comparable quarter of 2020. The report notes that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic had not yet impacted Uruguay in Q1 2020 and the fact that exports in Q1 2021 are higher shows that demand for the country’s goods has not diminished during the pandemic. Uruguay XXI highlights that timber, beef, and wheat exports drove the overall increase in March, on the back of growing demand from China and the US.
