In brief: Venezuela’s Maduro announces new Covid-19 relief package

* Venezuela’s de facto president, Nicolás Maduro, has announced a new economic relief package as the country enters the grip of a second wave of coronavirus (Covid-19) infections. Maduro said that further information on the relief measures would be released today (7 April), but announced that over 15m people that are registered on the government’s ‘Sistema Patria’ social welfare census would receive financial support. This will be distributed to self-employed workers and public and private companies. Maduro did not disclose the amount of economic aid to be disbursed. He also announced that citizens registered on Sistema Patria would receive a 25% discount on their water and electricity bills for April and May, and that small- and micro-enterprises created in 2021 would not have to pay income tax until the start of 2022. Maduro also said that evictions of families and entrepreneurs would be prohibited until September.
