Hernández faces fresh calls to resign in Honduras

No fewer than 37 civil-society groups in Honduras called for President Juan Orlando Hernández to step down this week over alleged drug-trafficking links. This followed a life sentence handed down on 30 March by a US court to his brother, Juan Antonio ‘Tony’ Hernández, for cocaine-importation, weapons, and false-statements offences. The president has repeatedly denied such links but there are signs that the new US administration under President Joe Biden will not be prepared to turn a blind eye to the serious allegations implicating him in the drug scandal. Shambolic recent primary elections have raised concerns that Hernández will have no trouble ‘stealing’ this November’s presidential elections for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN) in order to protect himself.
