No fewer than 37 civil-society groups in Honduras called for President Juan Orlando Hernández to step down this week over alleged drug-trafficking links. This followed a life sentence handed down on 30 March by a US court to his brother, Juan Antonio ‘Tony’ Hernández, for cocaine-importation, weapons, and false-statements offences. The president has repeatedly denied such links but there are signs that the new US administration under President Joe Biden will not be prepared to turn a blind eye to the serious allegations implicating him in the drug scandal.
