BOLIVIA: Áñez arrest brings renewed turmoil

Upon his inauguration in November 2020, Bolivia’s President Luis Arce was faced with three daunting tasks – to manage the country’s response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic; to lead the recovery of the national economy; and to bring political stability back to Bolivia, after 12 months of extreme volatility. It may still be too soon to judge his performance with regard to the first two challenges, but the imprisonment of former interim president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) on 13 March appeared to mark the clearest sign yet that Bolivia will have no easy escape from the vicious cycle of political retribution.
