ARGENTINA-PARAGUAY: Deforestation not just a Brazil problem

The Brazilian Amazon tends to garner most of the attention where deforestation and environmental destruction are concerned. While this reflects the sheer size of its biodiversity and environmental assets, the severity of the problem in Brazil, and the current government’s anti-environmental rhetoric, it can distract from deforestation problems in other, non-Amazon countries – such as fellow Southern Common Market (Mercosur) members Argentina and Paraguay, which are home to most of the Gran Chaco, South America’s second largest forest which also extends to parts of Bolivia and Brazil.
