Biden administration shores up ties with Argentina

Argentina: On 2 April US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a phone call with his Argentine counterpart, Felipe Solá. According to a US Department of State press release, Blinken emphasised that the bilateral “mutually beneficial relationship is rooted in shared democratic values”. The secretary of state highlighted the importance of working together to combat the climate crisis and “expressed support for Argentina’s initiative to host a regional summit to rally Latin America behind an ambitious climate agenda”.  He also underscored the imperative for regional diplomatic engagement to “address the threats to democracy, human rights, and security in our hemisphere”. A press release by Argentina’s foreign ministry following the call noted that Solá thanked the US administration for inviting President Alberto Fernández to the Leaders’ Climate Summit which is being hosted by the US to bring together leaders of major economies scheduled for 22-23 April. It also noted that a “probable visit” by President Fernández to the US was among the other items on the agenda.
