* El Salvador’s central bank (BCR) has released new figures which show that the country’s exports in March totalled US$574.2m - the highest monthly export figure hitherto registered and up 8.5% on February 2021 and 30.7% on March 2020. In the first quarter of 2021, El Salvador’s exports totalled US$1.6bn, up 10.1% on the same period in 2020. The main exports were: T-shirts (US$186m); sweaters (US$104m); and sugar (US$80m), while the main markets were Central America (US$684m) and the US (US$654m). Meanwhile imports to El Salvador totalled US$1.36bn in March, bringing the total for the first quarter of 2021 to US$3.35bn, up 22.5% on the same period in 2020. The main sources of imports were the US (US$911.4m) and China (US$544.4m) followed by Guatemala (US$378.5m); Mexico (US$272.4m); and Honduras (US$220.1m).
