CUBA: Hunger strikers cause fresh problems for Díaz-Canel

José Daniel Ferrer, the leader of Cuban dissident group Unión Patriótica de Cuba (Unpacu), has claimed victory after he and a group of activists called off a hunger strike demanding an end to repression by the Cuban state. The decision to end the strike after 21 days followed an apparent climbdown by the government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel under mounting foreign pressure. It comes as calls by the Cuban government for a change in policy by the new US administration led by President Joe Biden and an end to US sanctions, which were tightened under his predecessor Donald Trump, have so far fallen on deaf ears.
