In brief: Honduras’s private sector to buy vaccines

* Honduras’s main business lobby Consejo Hondureño de la Empresa Privada (Cohep) has said that it will seek to buy doses of vaccines against the coronavirus (Covid-19) to assist in government vaccination efforts. Cohep president, Juan Carlos Sikaffy, said the government led by President Juan Orlando Hernández had agreed to the plan which would provide the vaccines at no cost to recipients and operate through public health agencies. This comes as just 0.6% of the Honduran population have received their first dose of the vaccine according to the Our World in Data platform. The government has ordered 1.4m doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, 4.2m doses of Russia’s Sputnik-V vaccine and Israel is donating 5,000 doses of the vaccine produced by the US biotech firm Moderna for front-line medical staff. Honduras is also due to receive 424,800 doses through the World Health Organization’s Covax Facility. Honduras’s vaccination target population is estimated at 5.71m.
