REGION: Pandemic drives surge in e-commerce across the Andean region

According to statistics compiled by the Peruvian chamber of electronic commerce (Capece), the e-commerce sector grew by 50% in Peru in 2020, recording sales of US$6bn. Capece’s president, Helmut Cáceda, described the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic as being akin to condensing five years of sector growth into six months. Figures compiled by delivery company, DHL, suggest that the number of purchases made online in 2020 was three times that of 2019, reflecting a population increasingly comfortable with the concept of shopping online. Karen Munayco, the commercial director of DHL Express in Peru, affirmed that whilst only 25% of the company’s revenue came from online shopping prior to the pandemic, this had risen to 60% by September 2020 and an estimated 80% by December 2020, with the trend expected to continue well into 2021.
