CUBA: Castro relinquishes control

Cuba’s Revolution headed into uncharted territory on 19 April. For the first time since Fidel Castro swept into power after overthrowing the dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959, there is no longer a Castro at the helm. This moment was signposted back in April 2018 when Raúl Castro stepped aside to allow Miguel Díaz-Canel to become the new president of Cuba. But it was not until this week that full power was placed in Díaz-Canel’s hands when Raúl anointed him as first secretary of the Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC).
