Cuba’s Revolution headed into uncharted territory on 19 April. For the first time since Fidel Castro swept into power after overthrowing the dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959, there is no longer a Castro at the helm. This moment was signposted back in April 2018 when Raúl Castro stepped aside to allow Miguel Díaz-Canel to become the new president of Cuba. But it was not until this week that full power was placed in Díaz-Canel’s hands when Raúl anointed him as first secretary of the Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC).
