PERU: Who is the real Castillo?

One electoral survey might be wrong. But over the course of the last week a succession of local pollsters in Peru have published surveys all confirming the findings of the first: Pedro Castillo holds a commanding lead over Keiko Fujimori at the outset of the second-round campaign. While Fujimori, who is standing for the right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP), is a known quantity, Castillo, who is running for the far-left Perú Libre (PL), remains somewhat inscrutable. Precisely what he intends to do is unclear as he has distanced himself from the statements of prominent party members. He is so far refusing to divulge any details of his technical team. The overriding sense is that he has been thrust into a position he did not expect to find himself in and is adapting to it.
