In brief: Unemployment remains high in Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on unemployment, according to which the unemployment rate stood at 14.4% in the December 2020-February 2021 rolling quarter. This is up from 14.1% in the September-November 2020 rolling quarter, and a 2.7 percentage-point increase on the unemployment rate a year earlier. There are now 14.4m unemployed Brazilians, the highest number since current records began in 2012. “Although there is stability in the employment rate, it is possible to note higher pressure with 14.4m people searching for work”Adriana Beringuy, an Ibge researcher, said, adding that work in the informal sector has helped sustain employment. The informality rate in the December 2020-February 2021 rolling quarter stood at 39.6% (34m people), up from 39.1% in the previous rolling quarter and down from 40.6% in December 2019-February 2020.
