VENEZUELA: Opposition divided over new election body

A new national electoral council (CNE) was formally installed in Venezuela on 4 May. The overtly politicised CNE had long since lost credibility. This will not be fully restored by the changes undertaken by the government-controlled national assembly. The five-strong CNE is not stacked with Chavistas but they will still hold a majority. It was condemned out of hand by one key opposition figurehead, Juan Guaidó, but another, Henrique Capriles Radonski, a twice former presidential candidate, welcomed the changes as a positive move in the right direction.
