MEXICO: Attempt to prosecute governor fuels tensions
The attempts by the federal attorney general’s office (FGR) to prosecute the governor of Tamaulipas state, Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca, is producing major political tensions in Mexico. The approval of the FGR’s request for García’s immunity from prosecution to be lifted by the federal chamber of deputies has been repudiated by the governor and his political party, the right-wing main national opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN). García and the PAN accuse the FGR and the leftist Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of unfairly seeking to impeach the governor and tarnish the PAN’s image ahead of the federal legislative and state elections on 6 June. The case is threatening to produce a political crisis after the PAN-controlled Tamaulipas state congress rejected the chamber of deputies’ decision.
