COSTA RICA: Forced to address a record surge

Costa Rica’s health minister Daniel Salas last week announced the closure of non-essential businesses across the centre of the country from 3-9 May. The move follows a record surge in coronavirus (Covid-19) infections and concerns that hospitals are saturated. However, it was met with grumbling from leading private sector lobby Unión Costarricense de Cámaras y Asociaciones del Sector Empresarial Privado (UCCAEP), serving again to illustrate the balancing act between public health and economic growth.
