In brief: Brazil questions Saudi suspension of poultry exports

* Brazil’s foreign ministry (Itaramaty) and agriculture ministry (Mapa) have released a joint note expressing the Brazilian government’s “surprise and consternation” at the decision by Saudi Arabia to suspend its imports from 11 poultry meat plants in Brazil. The ministries note that they did not receive prior contact from Saudi Arabia nor justifications for the exclusion of these 11 plants now unauthorised from exporting to Saudi Arabia, but learnt of this development through the updated list of authorised exporters from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA). The Brazilian government has said that it will seek a resolution through all possible bilateral and multilateral channels, with the possibility of taking the issue to the World Trade Organization (WTO) if there is a proof of an undue trade barrier. Saudi Arabia is the second export market for Brazilian poultry, after China.
