Out-of-control pandemic threatens Brazil

The coronavirus (Covid-19) has claimed more lives in Brazil in the first four months of 2021 than during the nine months of the pandemic last year. This tragic reality can be in part explained by a more infectious and possibly more virulent strain of the virus, P1, first discovered in the city of Manaus, Amazonas state. Coupled with the federal government’s failure to pursue a coordinated and science-based response to the pandemic, this variant has led to the collapse of Brazil’s healthcare system and driven a humanitarian crisis, with likely long-term effects on Brazilian society.
