COLOMBIA/REGION: The long arm of Mexico’s DTOs

The relationship between South American and Mexican drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) – a crucial link in the international narcotics trade – has been transformed in recent years, according to the United Nations International Narcotics Control Board (INCB)’s annual report. Published in March, the report highlights how Mexican DTOs are playing an increasingly direct role on the ground in Colombia and Venezuela. This follows recent investigations that have voiced concern at the growing influence of Mexican DTOs in the Andean region, including the Sinaloa DTO, the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), and Los Zetas.
