MEXICO: Resetting relations with US

With US President Joe Biden now settled in the White House, the Mexican government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been advancing with its efforts to reshape all aspects of the Mexico-US bilateral relation. López Obrador has said that he wants to maintain close cooperation with its northern neighbour in all areas but that the relationship should be one of equals, with Mexico’s sovereignty always being respected. In practice this appears to mean that while the López Obrador administration is open to working with the US, it will not always be prepared to follow its lead and may even pursue a very different path in some key areas.
