In brief: Mexico’s industrial activity inches up

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the latest figures for its monthly indicator of industrial activity (Imai), according to which industrial activity expanded 0.7% in March compared with February, and 1.7% year-on-year compared with March 2020, when the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic forced a shutdown of the economy. In year-on-year terms, activity in the manufacturing industry grew 6.2% in March, while activity contracted in mining (-2.2%), electricity generation & distribution and water & gas distribution (-3.5%), and construction (-5.5%). Overall, industrial activity in the first quarter of the year contracted 1.7% compared with January-March 2020.
