MEXICO: Tit-for-tat spat over labour rights

The decision by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to send a formal note of protest to the US government for alleged unwarranted interference in Mexico’s sovereign affairs is not the only potential source of bilateral tensions. Trade unions from the US and Mexico have filed a formal complaint against Mexico over the alleged violation of workers’ rights regulations enshrined in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The US Trade Representative (USTR) then filed a separate complaint, only for Mexico’s foreign ministry to launch a counter-offensive, formally denouncing the apparent violation of the rights of Mexican workers in the US to the US government under the terms of the USMCA.
