In brief: Tourism in Mexico continued recovery in Q4 2020

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released its latest figures on the country’s tourism GDP, which expanded 7.7% in the final quarter of 2020 compared with the previous three months. Meanwhile, consumption by tourists grew 10.1% quarter-on-quarter in Q4 2020. These figures confirm the recovery of Mexico’s tourism sector, which accounts for 8.7% of national GDP, after an unprecedented plunge in tourism activity in Q2 2020 with the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. However, tourism in Mexico remains well below pre-pandemic levels: tourism GDP in Q4 2020 fell by 26.7% year-on-year, while consumption by tourists was down 27%.
