In brief: Google to expand data centres in Uruguay

* US internet giant Google, through its subsidiary Eleanor Applications, has acquired 30 hectares of land in a science park in Uruguay’s Canelones department, in order to continue expanding its Latin American data centres. Canelones intendent (governor), Yamandú Orsi, welcomed the “good news”. Industry Minister Omar Paganini welcomed the “potential” that the project offers Uruguay and its technological advancements. According to a statement circulating in the local media, Google described the project as an “important milestone” in “reinforcing Google's commitment to Uruguay and Latin America and the development of the local technological ecosystem”, although it is still awaiting the green light on “aspects” of the project before construction can begin.
