In brief: El Salvador approves cooperation agreement with China

* El Salvador’s 84-member unicameral national legislature has approved a cooperation agreement signed by El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele and the Chinese government back in 2019. Bukele tweeted that the agreement is for a US$500m donation for public investment “without conditions” in a water purification plant, a stadium, a library, and a port. El Salvador established formal relations with mainland China in August 2018 under the previous government led by Salvador Sánchez Cerén (2014-2019) after severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan, following in the footsteps of Central American neighbours Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Panama. Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua retain ties with Taiwan.
