BELIZE: The honeymoon is over

On 28 April, Belize’s parliament approved a new national budget, the General Revenue Appropriation Bill for fiscal year 2021/22. It includes 10% salary cuts for the public sector. It is the first budget from the ruling People’s United Party (PUP), led by Prime Minister John Briceño, since returning to power in November 2020 in a landslide 26-5 seat victory over the United Democratic Party (UDP), which ended 12 years in the political wilderness.
