URUGUAY: Lacalle Pou compelled to conduct reshuffle

Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou was forced to reshuffle his cabinet this week after the sudden death of the interior minister, Jorge Larrañaga, a political grandee. Larrañaga was the leader of one of the two main factions within the centre-right Partido Nacional (PN, Blancos), the senior partner in the ruling five-party coalition.

President Lacalle Pou cancelled his trip to Ecuador to attend the investiture of Guillermo Lasso on 24 May after Larrañaga, 64, died of a stroke two days earlier. Lacalle Pou gave an emotional eulogy, bewailing the loss of his most influential minister, taken “in his political prime”. He praised Larrañaga’s “tireless work ethic”, adding that he had nothing but respect for “a fierce competitor” who had put him through his paces: Larrañaga led the Alianza Nacional faction of the PN competing against Lacalle Pou, the leader of the party’s rival faction, Todos hacia Adelante, in primary elections.
