PERU: SL massacre could give Fujimori late boost

Just as she got within touching distance, Keiko Fujimori seems to have fallen slightly further behind Pedro Castillo, according to the latest electoral surveys ahead of Peru’s presidential run-off on 6 June. But Castillo could yet suffer a late slip in the polls in the wake of one of the worst atrocities by Peru’s Sendero Luminoso (SL) guerrilla group in recent years: 18 people were killed in the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro rivers valley (Vraem) on 23 May. While Castillo condemned the attack, he has been linked to the Movimiento por Amnistía y Derechos Fundamentales (Movadef), widely considered to be SL’s political arm, and one of the elected legislators for his far-left Perú Libre (PL), Guillermo Bermejo, is being investigated for ties to SL.
