In brief: Mexico’s unemployment rate edges up

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the latest monthly figures from the national survey of employment and occupation (Enoen), which show that the unemployment rate stood at 4.7% in April. This is equivalent to 2.7m people being unemployed. The April unemployment rate is up 0.2 percentage points compared with March, while the underemployment rate totalled 13.2% in April, down 0.4 percentage points compared with March. The Enoen showed that Mexico’s economically active population totalled 57.5m, of which 95.3% were employed in April. The economically active population has grown by 12.7m compared with April 2020, when restrictions implemented to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic kept many working age people at home and shrunk the ranks of the economically active population.
