Mexico sees another electoral process marked by violence

Mexico’s 6 June midterm elections are billed as the country’s largest with over 20,000 elected posts up for grabs and over 120,000 candidates taking part. It could also end up being one of the most violent. With a week still to go before the vote, over 80 candidates had already been killed during the campaign period and dozens of other politicians have been victims of violent attacks. Electoral violence has been a feature of Mexican elections in recent years, and the Mexican authorities have implemented various measures to try to better protect candidates and guarantee that elections are free. However, it is clear that more steps must be taken.
