REGION: US needs a more nuanced approach to counter China

On 8 May, China’s Xinhua news agency carried a report on the deepening of relations between China and Suriname. Twelve days later, on 20 May, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, an independent agency of the US government, held a hearing on China’s advancing interests in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) which revealed the continuing concerns that the US harbours about China’s actions and intentions in the region. Naturally, the testimony to the commission concentrated mostly on Latin America, but there were also some interesting insights into China’s relations with, and interest in, the Caribbean.
