In brief: Colombian coffee producers warn protests harming exports

* The director of Colombia’s national federation of coffee producers (FNC), Roberto Vélez, has warned that the coffee sector is losing foreign clients as a result of roadblocks erected by anti-government protesters, which he said are hindering the shipment of coffee out of the country. Vélez said that foreign clients are switching to non-Colombian producers, and that some foreign buyers have indicated they will not be using Colombian coffee in their blends for the next six months as a result of uncertainty over the ability to export produce. “It’s a very powerful message that caught us off guard, because there’s nothing we can say to them other than that Colombian coffee will some day leave the country, some day we’ll be able to ship it again as we used to”, Vélez said.
