BRAZIL: Manaus under siege

The past year has been a difficult one for Brazil as a whole, but the inhabitants of Manaus, the capital of the northern state of Amazonas, have arguably had it particularly tough: the city of two million deep in the Amazon jungle was one of the country’s worst-hit areas in both the first and second wave of coronavirus (Covid-19) infections; it has recently been affected by flooding due to heavy rains; and it is now suffering from a wave of criminally driven violence.
