In brief: Region’s largest wind farm starts operating in Brazil

* Multinational power company Enel has announced that its renewable energy subsidiary in Brazil, Enel Green Power Brasil Participações, has begun commercial operations in the Lagoa dos Ventos wind farm which is situated in the northeastern state of Piauí. The 716MW wind farm, which involved a R$3bn (US$593m) investment, is the largest wind facility in Latin America and the largest operated by Enel in the world. It is comprised of 230 wind turbines with the capacity to generate 3.3 terawatt hours (TWh) per year, thus avoiding the emission of over 1.9m tonnes (t) of CO2, according to Enel. “As our largest wind facility in the world, Lagoa dos Ventos represents a significant step forward for our sustainable growth, while also supporting the green recovery in Brazil, further contributing to the diversification of the country’s energy mix,” Salvatore Bernabei, the CEO of Enel Green Power, said. Last December, Enel also announced the construction of the Lagoa dos Ventos III project; the new 396MW wind farm, which will require an investment of €360m (US$438m), will bring the Lagoa dos Ventos facility’s total capacity to 1.1GW, with the ability to generate 5.0TWh annually.
