Energy in Latin America and the Caribbean

Uruguay’s good ETI score reflects over a decade of government policies focused on developing renewables. In October last year, for example, Uruguay produced 36% of its electricity from wind and solar energy, ranking it fourth in the world (behind Denmark, Lithuania, and Luxembourg). If hydropower is included, renewable energy jumps up to account for 97% of total electricity demand. This is a sharp contrast to the situation 20 years earlier when the country primarily used fossil fuels and had a heavy oil import bill (about 30% of total imports by value), as well as having to import electricity from neighbouring Argentina.
