On various criteria Chile is at the forefront of the LAC energy transition. It is one of the highest placed countries in the World Economic Forum (WEF) energy transition index (ETI). In addition, in 2020 it attracted more foreign investment into its renewables sector than either Brazil or Mexico, both of which had led the ranking for the preceding five years. The IEA has described Chile as a “world class” destination for solar and wind developers. Under the country’s National Energy Policy 2050, originally launched in 2015, it aims to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030. This is to be achieved by maintaining the contribution of hydroelectricity at the current 45% while boosting non-hydro renewables (mainly wind and solar) to 25%.
