Vice President Harris visits Mexico, signs agreements

Mexico: On 8 June Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met US Vice President Kamala Harris in Mexico City. Following their meeting, the two governments announced a string of agreements. These include plans to hold a High-Level Economic Dialogue in September; and the announcement by the US that it will invest an additional US$130m in technical assistance and cooperation over the next three years to work with Mexico as it implements labour legislation reforms and fund programmes that will support workers, improve working conditions, and address child and forced labour. The two governments also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishing a strategic partnership to address the lack of economic opportunities in northern Central America, while the US government announced a package of grants, loans, and other commitments to help generate broad-based growth in southern Mexico, create jobs, and reduce economic inequality in the region. As regards security, the two governments announced plans to hold a cabinet-level security dialogue to discuss a shared vision for security; that US and Mexican law enforcement agencies will partner to exchange information and take appropriate actions to address the shared priority of disabling human trafficking and human smuggling organisations; and to work jointly to resolve disappearances cases in Mexico.
