In brief: Mexico’s industrial production up in annual terms

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show that industrial production in the country was up 35.7% year-on-year in April 2021, a high figure explained by the low basis of comparison, as production in April 2020 was impacted by the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The Inegi figures show that manufacturing industries’ production was up 50.2% year-on-year in April; construction was up 44.6%; and mining output was up 5.6%. However, the Inegi data show that industrial production in April declined 0.2% in seasonally-adjusted terms compared with March. The utilities sector (transmission and distribution of electricity; supply of water and gas) was down by 1% in April compared with the previous month, while manufacturing industries declined by 0.5%, and the construction sector declined by 0.3%. Mining output was up 1% compared to March.
